Soylent Meal Replacement Drink

What is Soylent?Soylent Vegetarian Food Replacement Drink

Soylent is a nutritional drink. Its creator, software engineer Rob Rhinehart, researched nutritional requirements and developed the formula by self-experimentation based on his own research online, with textbooks, and through scientific journals.

A commercial version of Soylent has been financed by a crowdfunding campaign on Tilt.com andventure capital which raised funds in excess of US$3,500,000. The funding paid for additional research and modification of the formula. The first shipments of U.S. orders began in the first week of May 2014.

Free yourself from the time and money you spend on food today, get healthy, and reduce your environmental impact.

Consider how this movement could reshape the way we view food and usher in a new era of freedom: freedom from the gendered tyranny of the kitchen, dangerous conditions in fields and slaughterhouses, animal cruelty, the plight of starvation and malnutrition and senseless conflict over resources that need not be scarce.

Why use Soylent?

Time: You can prepare multiple meals in minutes with no need to shop for individual ingredients or plan ahead.

Money: You will spend less than $10 per day on food, and less than $4 per meal. You will get more than a day’s worth of meals for less than the cost of takeout food.

Nutrition: You will be eating a balanced and wholesome meal, while getting all the essential nutrients required to fuel the human body.

Is Soylent Vegetarian / Vegan?

Soylent is vegetarian, but not vegan.* I will be providing a vegan version separately because it is more expensive. People have told me they are willing to pay a little more for a vegan version but I’d still like to offer one using whey that is as cheap as possible. Perhaps at some point we can figure out a novel way to produce amino acids cheaper than cows can. Synthetic biology?

Flax oil does not have the EPA and DHA fatty acids, but it does have an acid (ALA) that the body can use to synthesize EPA and DHA, it just takes more energy, and the conversion efficiency is low. This will be the source of the omega 3’s in the vegan version.

One of my favorite parts of soylent is many ingredients don’t come from food at all. For example, potassium comes from sylvite, and calcium comes from limestone. No farming or livestock required.

*Update:

In Soylent (v1.2), the previous omega-3 from fish has been replaced with omega-3 from algae making the drink suitable for vegans.

What’s New in Soylent 1.3?

Soylent 1.3 now contains dipotassium phosphate, which replaces potassium gluconate as the primary source of potassium. Through this change, we have been able to improve the neutrality of Soylent’s flavor profile while decreasing the mass of the Soylent pouch to 432 grams.

You will also notice that we have made a slight change in our packaging with another reduction in the size of our shipping boxes. Customer feedback has indicated that surplus volume in our shipping boxes is inconvenient, and we are working constantly to make the packaging as space-efficient as possible.

Does Soylent Contain Gluten?

Making Soylent free of all major allergens has been a priority since conception. While no ingredient in Soylent 1.3 naturally contains gluten, our oat flour is produced in a facility that also processes wheat products. Even with an allergen containment program in place, Soylent contains gluten at a concentration greater than 5 parts-per-million, the upper limit for gluten free certification from the Celiac Support Association.

The cross-contamination challenges of oats are significant. From the farms where they are grown, the containers in which they are transported, and the facilities that process them, oats have numerous opportunities to come into contact with surfaces shared with wheat, barley and rye. Certified gluten free oat flour has proven extremely challenging to source at scale, and several promising alternatives to oat flour are currently under examination. We look forward to releasing a future Soylent update which is certified gluten free.

Dear friends of Space Nutrients Station!

We are extremely thankful for the support we’ve been receiving during our liquidation campaign. It’s very humbling to know how many people have actually supported our vision and believed in the product that was supposed to change the way humans eat.

We are reaching to our community to ask for advice and suggestions. In our U.S. warehouse, we have close to 3,000 blender bottles left and we wanted to find a place to send them to, all at once. If you have any suggestions or work with any organizations that may find value in having these blender bottles, please let us know. We would only require a payment for shipping without charging a dime for the bottles themselves.

All bright, crazy, and humorous ideas are welcome 😉

Soylent: What Happened When I Stopped Eating For 2 Weeks

This post describes the longest non-employee trial of Soylent to date (two weeks without food), including before-and-after data such as:

    – Comprehensive blood panels
    – Body weight and bodyfat percentage
    – Cognitive performance
    – Resting heart rate
    – Galvanic skin response
    – Sleep

I share my thoughts in the AFTERWORD and occasionally in brackets, but this article focuses on Shane’s experience and data. Please also note that this is *not* a Soylent take-down piece.

That said, there are some issues. I expect the debate on Soylent to be fierce, so please leave your thoughts in the comments. I’ll encourage the Soylent founders to answer as many questions as they can. From all sides, I’m most interested in studies or historical precedent that can be cited, but logical arguments are fine.
